His Voice Is A Whisper
One of my favorite Christian bands is Love and the Outcome. The band consists of Jodi and Chris, who are husband-wife duo from Canada and currently living and recording in Nashville, TN. Jodi says, “The Lord had so clearly led us to this land, literally to Nashville, I’m sure it’s how Abraham and the Israelites felt. We’ve literally gone through the desert to get to this season of celebration.” In their recent album, These Are The Days, Jodi talks in a commentary about the revelation of how the Lord's voice is a whisper.
She says, "Well there's theme in all the writing and all the conversations we've been having with the Lord about how he whispers to us and all of a sudden one morning I think I was sitting and having devotions and the thought that the Lord never yells at us became this new revelation to me. My dad and I are really similar, and so we spent a lot of time starting to yell back and forth, it always ended in love, but there were some heated times growing up for me and my dad. And I think I kind of carried that, you know, vision of the Lord, my Heavenly Father, as someone who maybe shook is finger at me once in while, and there was a moment for me, writing this song, where the Lord really revealed, 'I don't yell, that's not my voice. My voice is a whisper, and to hear my whisper you have to come close.' Because a whisper is such an intimate thing. I mean you can't hear a whisper across the room. You can only hear a whisper really, really up close and intimate with the person that is whispering to you. So this song is about hearing from the Lord, and how sometimes the only way we can hear is if we stay really close to Him."
Jodi's words inspired and revealed something new to me. I love her idea of God's voice as a whisper because it so very true. In order to have a relationship with the Lord we have to come close to him. A relationship with the Lord is very intimate because it is only between you and him. Similar to how a whisper is very intimate because it is only between you and the person who is whispering to you. We cannot just expect to hear God's voice without putting effort into creating a relationship with him. We must form an intimacy with him in prayer, which will allow us to hear his voice more fully. If we connect with God on this level then we can form a beautiful and everlasting relationship with him where we can hear His most precious whisper.
Much love,
Gracie
